Skillnader i smak är berikande, och att kunna uttrycka sin smak är en bra sak. Men det är lätt att grupper – inom till exempel sf-fandom – bygger hierarkier där vissa sorters läsning är förknippat med högre status. I små och slutna kompisgäng är det kanske inte så problematiskt att odla en intern smak och hylla en intern kanon medan annat sågas. Men det blir en annan dynamik på till exempel sf-kongresser eller i större forum online. När personer som uppfattas som tongivande uttrycker sig på ett sätt som kan ses som nedlåtande om vissa typer av fantastik, då kan hela grupper känna sig uteslutna eller nedvärderade.

The word ”steampunk” originally didn’t refer to any punk content at all, but was just a pun on ”cyberpunk”, a dominating movement in science fiction in the 1980’s. Still, the word is suggestive and makes many look for the punk in steampunk. Some of them, some of the time, are disappointed, and say like Cat Valente: ”what a joke it is to call something so inherently nostalgic, conservative, and comfort-oriented ’punk.'” Is there a potential, an unfulfilled promise, of ”punk” in steampunk? If so, what would be interesting ways of developing the punkier kinds of steampunk?

We hear a lot about surveillance these days. NSA people know all about us, at least if they want to. People still talk about Big Brother and use Nineteen Eighty-Four as a common point of reference for understanding how we are being watched. But this is probably not a perfect image of the situation we are living in now. Should we update our nightmares, and how can we do that? How is science fiction today addressing these issues?
